Case of the Spirit Spell by Amorette Anderson

5 Hoots!

Book 10 of the Hillcrest Witch series is officially out! Full discloser, this is one of my favorite indie cozy mystery authors! In fact I am actually on this author’s team that receives ARC (advance reader copies) in exchange for honest reviews. Have you ever read a book that made you feel so good that you wanted to jump into it and be best friends with the main character? That is this series for me and I was over the moon when I was added to the ARC team!

In this edition, Penny, our witch/vampire and amateur PI is trying to investigate the death of a local man by the name of Art. At first glance it appeared like a simple car accident, but with a closer look it was clear that someone cut his break lines of his truck knowing that he would be going down a dangerous hill. To make matters worse, it appears that a member of Cora’s pack is the main suspect. In order to find the truth and figure out who was behind this murder Penny is going to have to really focus and not let her own biases distract her.

What I love about this series is that it is a lot of fun and sometimes you learn something! Penny is a fantastic protagonist, she is far from perfect but she is always herself. Her familiar, Turkey the cat, is very smart and helps her piece together the clues. And of course you have her coven, a group of diverse women who love and support each other. In each book they touch on different elements that help them to become better witches. In the last book, case of the air spell, the learned to realize that everything is ever changing. In this book you learn that there are two sides to everyone, good and bad, and sometimes that may not be a bad thing. Another fun thing about this book is how magic is used. I mentioned that Penny is a witch/ vampire but she is not the blood drinking type. Instead she makes magic food that gives her all the nutrients she needs, such as Healthy sprinkles that leave food tasting delicious but makes it healthy. I mean who wouldn’t want that?! Penny is seriously a girl after my own heart!
