Case of the Fire Spell by Amorette Anderson

Book 11 of the Hillcrest Witch series is finally out and Amorette did not disappoint!

If you love cozy mysteries with a magical twist you really need to give this series a try. If you have been following my blog you know that I have read the other books in this series and they are always just so fun! Penny is a private investigator, witch, and more recently a vampire! What I love about her is that she is a bit ditzy but really does have a heart of gold. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that her familiar is freaking adorable, and yes he can communicate with her. Turkey is a very smart cat!

In this addition to the series the victim is actually a magical being from another realm who gets staked in the heart. Was he a vampire? No, he wasn’t, him being staked was a sign for Penny to watch out or she would be next! So, not only was this a sign, but it was a clue that the killer wasn’t human. That is right, we are getting a paranormal only story this time around! Not that a regular murder mystery isn’t fun, but the killer being involved in the supernatural world just gives the book a little extra oomph!

Then to make matters worse, Penny’s copy of The Art and Science of Becoming a Witch (ASBW)was stolen. For those of you not familiar with the series, this is the book Penny and her friends are studying in order to become full blown witches. Each book in this series covers a chapter/spell from this book and you guessed it in this book the focus is on fire!

In this book Penny has to find a killer, a thief, and also fight her insecurities now that a sexy vampire has come into town. Of course Max is only interested in this other vampire for purely academic purposes, but that doesn’t stop Penny from worrying. So what does Penny do with her insecurities? She tries to focus on everything else and tried to avoid it. Honestly, that is a move that I would probably pull. That’s what I love about the way Penny is written! She isn’t this unrealistic and overly perfect female. She is far from it and that is okay!

Another thing that I loved about this book was that the killer and the accomplice was not at all who you think it is. Just when you are sure you know who it is you find out that they couldn’t be the killer or even the thief. And of course that use of magic in this series is a lot of fun! Magical knitting, healthy sprinkles for food, and of course who doesn’t love broom riding? Overall I loved this book, but then again I love this series. Amorette’s charaters are a lot of fun and super relatable…okay maybe not Max, but still. If you are looking for a light hearted paranormal cozy, this is the one for you!
