In the beginning of the new year I always like to post different books in the “self-help” genre for my readers. The reason for this is that not all self-help books can reach the same person. So, when I saw that RuPaul had a book that fell into this genre I had no choice but to scoop it up. I have looked Ru ever since I was a little girl…I mean look at her! She was bigger than life, so I was excited to give this book a try. Was I disappointed? NO! This book was full of beautiful pictures of her in all her different outfits. Then why didn’t it get 5 stars? Well, I was honestly hoping for a little more in this one.
The first thing that made this book stand out were the pictures of course. Each picture came with a little story or pearls of wisdom. While a lot of the advice was really good, the book itself just felt like it was a bunch of saying and not really a cohesive self help book. When I think of self help books I imagine them to be more instructional and informative. I expect it to flow from idea to idea in a seamless way that makes sense. This book did not accomplish that. I really wish that it had more information on what RuPaul did to embrace the person that they are. RuPaul is just this amazing and larger than life person whose confidence is so incredibly strong. I was hoping we would get some tips on how to be that way too but alas we did not.
Overall, I did enjoy the book and the pearls of wisdom that Ru had to offer but I was not blown away. This does not mean that you shouldn’t check out this book. I was still fun to look at all the pictures and hear Ru’s words of wisdom. But if you are looking for a book that makes you feel like a strong and confident bad ass, maybe keep looking. BUT if you just love RuPaul because….well RUPUAL! then definitely check this book out!
